Set aside money for annual car repairs

A car-repair reserve can turn some maintenance costs into planned spending, while leaving room for genuinely unexpected faults.

Mechanics working in an automotive workshop, repairing cars and performing maintenance.

Use the vehicle's own history

Look at service records, inspection results and work already recommended by a qualified mechanic. Distinguish scheduled maintenance from a fault that still needs diagnosis. A generic annual average may not reflect an older vehicle, high mileage or recent major repairs.

Include the costs you can reasonably foresee, such as a quoted service or tyres approaching replacement. Avoid diagnosing safety issues through budgeting assumptions; a low reserve is not evidence that necessary work can safely wait.

Build a practical annual pot

For an illustrative plan, a $240 service, $360 tyre allowance and $180 for other expected work total $780. Saving $65 monthly would fund that annual amount over twelve months. If the first $240 payment arrives in two months, an opening reserve or larger early contributions may be needed.

Keep this reserve distinct from fuel and parking. Combining every vehicle cost into one large category can make it hard to see whether maintenance money is being spent on daily journeys.

Update after each repair

Record the work, cost and remaining reserve. A repair may remove one expected future expense while revealing another. Recalculate from the current position instead of continuing a transfer based on a now-outdated annual estimate.

If costs repeatedly exceed what the household can support, compare the broader transport options, including the full cost of replacing the vehicle or using alternatives. The reserve is a planning tool, not a guarantee that any car can be made affordable simply by assigning it a monthly amount.
