Plan for the end of a payment holiday

A pause in payments changes timing. Find out what accumulated and how the normal schedule will restart.

Retrieve the original arrangement

A payment holiday or temporary pause is an agreement with specific conditions. It does not automatically mean interest stopped or the skipped instalments disappeared. Read the confirmation to see which payments were postponed, whether interest continued and what was supposed to happen when the pause ended.

Locate the restart date and contact the lender before it arrives if the next amount is unclear. Ask whether the term has been extended, instalments increased or a separate catch-up payment created. Use the revised written schedule, not a memory of the phone conversation that established the pause.

Build the first month back

Imagine a normal monthly payment of $150 resumes on the 10th. The agreed arrangement also requires $30 a month for six months to address a $180 postponed amount, with no extra charges in this hypothetical example. The budget needs $180 during those six months, not the previous $150.

If payday is on the 15th, the first resumed payment may need to come from the preceding month's income. Write that timing explicitly. A monthly budget can appear sufficient while the paying account remains short on the 10th. Set aside the first payment as soon as the amount is confirmed.

Check the operational details

Ask whether automatic collection restarts by itself and whether the payment account is still correct. If you moved banks during the pause, update the arrangement through a verified channel. Check the first debit and the next statement to ensure the revised terms were applied.

If the restart is unaffordable, explain the shortfall and ask about available options before missing the payment where possible. Keep a realistic income-and-expense summary ready. Do not assume another pause is available or that sending an arbitrary smaller amount satisfies the agreement. Record any replacement arrangement with its own dates, amounts and review point. Preserve the pause agreement alongside the revised schedule so that you can trace how the postponed amounts were treated.
