Begin with a safe assessment
A damaged kettle is not a reason to experiment with electrical repairs. Stop using visibly damaged equipment and follow its manufacturer's safety guidance. Describe the problem to an appropriate service rather than opening electrical components to diagnose it yourself. The financial comparison begins with suitable information about the fault.
Locate the purchase record and check any applicable support before paying for work. Ask whether a diagnostic charge is payable if you decline repair, and whether that charge is included in the completed job. This avoids discovering an extra cost after deciding what seems economical.
Compare the complete job
Imagine a repair quoted at $28 including diagnosis, against a suitable replacement delivered for $45. The immediate difference is $17. If collection after repair requires an $8 journey, the repair route totals $36 and the difference falls to $9. These figures are hypothetical, not typical repair prices.
Ask what the repair fixes and whether other problems are known. A machine's age alone cannot tell you its remaining life, and neither a quote nor a new purchase guarantees a particular period without trouble. Use uncertain lifespan estimates as scenarios rather than precise predictions.
Set a decision boundary
Agree a limit before authorizing diagnostic work. If an inspection fee has already been paid, include it in your spending record, but compare the remaining repair charge with the replacement amount when choosing the next step. Earlier spending should not force an unnecessarily expensive continuation.
A replacement needs to meet the actual household requirement: appropriate capacity, usable controls and suitable dimensions. Extra features are optional purchases rather than proof that repair is impractical. Confirm delivery and disposal arrangements before paying. Record the final choice and amount for your household records, while remembering that another appliance with a different fault may deserve a different decision even if its original purchase price was similar.
If a replacement is available locally, compare its collection cost with delivery instead of automatically accepting either as cheaper.
